Hip complaints

Hip complaints

Running, jumping, squatting and bending are movements in which the hip joint plays an important role. If the muscles around the hip do not work well, the hip joint may get overloaded and complaints arise in the muscles that subsequently have to work too hard. But most of the time it is not clear what causes the pain. Complaints which can be felt up to the knee, or complaints to the left / right buttock muscle can be forthcoming from the lower back. The chiropractor will use his/her expertise and determine the cause of the complaints and share the treatment plan with you.

Anatomy of the hip

Like the shoulder the hip joint consists of a ball and a socket, but in contrast to the shoulder both bone pieces fit exactly and form a stable joint. The cartilage at the end of the bone pieces ensures that there is not too much friction. In order to strengthen the joint, there are strong ligaments that keep the ball and socket together. Furthermore these ligaments steer and push the muscles while moving. Muscles make movement possible.

Symptoms of hip complaints

Stiffness, pain and immobility are the most common symptoms of hip complaints. Often, the inguinal region is the part of the body which can transfer pain to the upper leg or the knee. Due to pain and a limitation of movement in the hip we often see pain avoiding movement. This puts more pressure on the joints which can lead to inflammation of the bursas.

Causes of hip complaints

Complaints from the hip can have various causes. As mentioned earlier, hip complaints do not always occur in the hip. Therefore the complaints should be examined thoroughly and on all moving parts of the body. Disorders and injuries can cause hip problems.

Typical hip complaints

The most common complaints from the hip are described below:

If you have osteoarthritis, the smooth cartilage on the bone ends is worn and therefore the bones no longer glide smoothly past each other. The bone ends rub which makes moving harder and causes pain. Osteoarthritis may be caused by a genetic predisposition (hip deviation) or by straining of the joint (example by heavy physical work, heavy exercise or being overweight).

Bursas will ensure that bones, muscles and tendons move smoothly. By straining a joint this will increased pressure on the bursa and cause inflammation. This can also happen if one falls or when suffering from an infection.

Hip dysplasia

With hip dysplasia, the joint is underdeveloped. The hip ball does not fit in the socket which makes it unstable and the ball can easily slide out. At the point when the hip no longer fits in the socket, it is called a dislocation of the hip (bone from the hip socket). Hip dysplasia can occur at first without pain, but when treatment isn’t done properly eventually osteoarthritis (wear) will arise.

Treatment of hip complaints

While reading the hip complaints of the patient, a MoveWell chiropractor will examine the mobility of the legs, back, shoulders and arms. With this scan of the moving parts of the body a chiropractor uses his/her expertise to determine the cause of the complaint. The back will be getting extra attention because many hip symptoms are a result of problems in the back. The treatment will be a combination of treating symptoms and immobilities. In some cases it is necessary to maintain the muscle condition with exercises to prevent  recurring  problems.
